Best Lawyers has named individuals as Lawyers of the Year in the Philadelphia, based on their particularly high level of peer recognition.

Joseph A. Tate
Dechert
Antitrust Law

Early in his career, Joseph A. Tate, 68, had the option to accept lucrative sales job offers, be a jet fighter pilot in the US Air Force, or attend law school.

He chose law school and became a premiere defender of domestic and international corporations, high ranking executives, fellow attorneys and other professionals against allegations of white collar crime with emphasis on antitrust, patent fraud, and other regulatory issues.

Tate takes pride in forming personal relationships with the clients he represents, most of whom are repeat clients. He says that the work of his colleagues Stephen D. Brown and Christine C. Levin, his longtime assistant Diane Thompson, and the team at Dechert are directly related to his success. In 2005, FMC Corporation, one of Tate’s oldest clients, faced anticompetitive practice charges in the European Union.

“My team and I went over there and won that case,” Tate says. “We were the only American lawyers in that courtroom, and the only team to get an acquittal.”

What followed was a four-year legal journey including criminal proceedings and class action litigation. Ultimately, FMC was acquitted, while five other companies were found guilty of price fixing.

“Our client was thrilled with the result, and it was a tremendous achievement,” Tate says.

Tate attended Villanova University for both undergraduate and law school. He earned his JD in 1966.

Tate advises new lawyers to think outside the box for solutions to their clients’ problems.

“In law school you’re taught to look at precedence. Try the opposite and keep your eyes open to new approaches,” he says.
