You could say that law runs through Gordon Earle Nichols’ blood. He grew upwatching his father and grandfather practice law together in his hometown, Madisonville, Kentucky. During hismore than 25-year legal career, Nichols has become known as a go-to attorney in handling all types of benefits and compensation matters. In addition, Nichols is a recognizedexpert in Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) issues.
Nichols started practicing law in the estate planning and probate area in 1980. By early1982, he was drafted into the ERISA area after the young partner handling the ERISA work at his firm decided to leave. The ERISA practice is a corporate support function, helping employers provide retirement and welfare plan benefits to their employees in the most efficient way possible.
“Initially, like many new ERISA lawyers, I was lost,” Nichols says. “It took several years of hard work to get up to speed on the tax, labor, insurance, trust and corporate issues associated with the benefits practice at the firm.”
In his personal practice today, Nichols spends a great deal of time working on ERISA issues that arise in the context of mergers and acquisitions of all types, with a particular emphasis on the health care industry,and executive compensation matters. His achievements have led him to be continuously selected for inclusion by The Best Lawyers in America® since 1993.
