Best Lawyers has named individuals as Lawyers of the Year in Indiana, based on their particularly high level of peer recognition.

When Mary Beth Braitman began working in employee benefits matters at the Internal Revenue Service, she didn’texpect the experience to lead her to law school.
“When I started atthe IRS, I didn’t know anything about employee benefits,” she says. “Today, as an attorney, I view itas an ever-changing environment with constant regulation changes that challenge me intellectually.”
Braitman assists governmental retirement systems with federal tax, compliance, fiduciary, plan design issues and more. She helps multiple public pension plans around the country on tax issues, plan design issues, plan qualification issues, IRS compliance issues, fiduciary issues and health care issues.
“The landscape has gone through so many different things, with the health care reform act being the biggest right now,” she says. “There was a period when there was a lot of restructuring of 401k plans, changes in benefits law, as well as accounting changes. All of these things impact people’s lives,”
Braitman earned her JD from Indiana University School of Law in 1981 and joined Ice Miller that same year. Her career has allowed her to work in 31 different states in the last three years.
Braitman says that she is most proud of fact that MultiCultural Law Magazine recognized Ice Milleras a Top 100 Law Firm for Diversity and rankedit 14th in Diversity for Women. In addition, The American Lawyer recognized the firm as having the highest percentage of female equity partners, and ranked it fifth in the category of women partners with 26.9 percent.
“I’ve been very fortunate, and it also helped that those around of me always had high expectations of me, whether it was my parents, the IRS management team, or clients,” she says. “When people have high expectations of you, it makes an incredible difference in your ability to achieve.”
