WHITE SPRINGS

For more than 18 years, Betty Cave has been learning about the benefits of soothing lavender and vibrant peppermint, and sharing it with everyone she meets – from hospice caregivers to cancer patients.

The Arizona aromatherapist and herbalist believes using natural plant oils and extracts can greatly improveone’s quality of life.

She will be teaching several classes at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park during her summer stay in White Springs.

“People need to relax more,”Cave said. “Stress can lead to many other health problems.”

She pointed to an aromatherapy pot with copper tubing.

“It can help change negative energy into positive energy,” she said.

One of Cave’s favorite oils is lavender oil.

“Lavender can relieve stress, burns, bites and cuts,” Cave claims. “Adding some to shampoo can take the pain out of sunburns on scalps. Using two drops of it with virgin oil and rubbing it on babies’ feet can put them to sleep.”

Cave said that she had one customer use lavender oil on her stallion to calm it down.

When the customer forgot to put the cap back on the bottle, the horse knocked the bottle over and rolled inthe lavender oil as it soaked a pile of hay.

Cave has also helped numerous cancer patients improve their quality of life.

Some have actually beat the disease,

She advises her cancer clients to soak in a bath with1/2 cup of baking soda,1/2 a cup of Borax, lavender oil and 1/2 a cup of peroxide, to soothe pain and detox the cells.

Cave also uses an herb called chaparral for her customers with cancer.

“It is a powerful antioxidant that can prevent cell damage,” she said. “I met one little girl who had skin cancers on her face that caused her to wear a mask because the other children made fun of her. After using chaparral, her skin was baby-smooth and beautifully healthy.”Her Blue Pain Lotion is a best seller.

Made with chamomile, birch, peppermint, cocoa butter and vitamin E among other ingredients, only one fingertip of the lotion instantly refreshes and relieves tired muscles, Cave claims.

“I have had clients with carpal tunnel and arthritis apply the lotion after their baths and then use Saran Wrap around their wrists,” Cave said. “Within 70 seconds, they feel great.”

Her spritzes – made from oxygenated spring water – hydrate and cool cells to help clients stay focused and feel alert.

Cave has helped school teachers calm down children with lavender scents in their classrooms and peppermint scents after lunch to combat sleepiness.

She recommends that test-takers use both oils to stay calm when taking an exam, but alert enough to recall all the information.

Cave is offering two classes that teach participants how to make their own beauty products.

Students will make their own cucumber cream, a melt and pour soap, and a sleep pillow.

The $15 fee includes all materials and park admission.

This class will be offered at 2 p.m. this Tuesday and again on July 26.

Aromatherapy has existed for more than 1,000 years and involves the use of oils extracted from plants including lavender, geranium, orange and evening primose.

On Friday, Cave will offer four classes that explore the basic supplies needed to start the use of aromatherapy, emotional balance, women’s health and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

An $80 fee covers all four courses on Friday, various oils used in the class, a book for notes and admission into the park.

The class will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., starting with “Learn the Basics” – which explores the useof oils of lavender, peppermint, rose and lemon grass.

From 11 a.m. to noon, Cave will discuss how the essential oils of bergamot, eucalyptus, lemon and orange promote general wellness.

“Women’s Ailments” will take place from noon until 1 p.m. and will cover the use of geranium, clary sage, evening primose and thuja.

The final class from 1 to 2 p.m. will discuss the emotional benefits from sandalwood, ylang ylang, tea tree and patchouli.
