There aren’t many attorneys who can say that they have tried a case in every county in Arizona, but David Burr Udall can.
Since earning his LL.B. from the University of Arizona 1954, Udall has become a highly respected trial lawyer specializing in insurance defense litigation. Udall also handles personal injury litigation, as well as general civil and commercial cases.
One of Udall’s most memorable cases involved a polio vaccination issue, and Udall called upon Jonas Edward Salk, the medical scientist who developed the first safe and effective polio vaccine, to testify.
“He’s probably the most important person I’ve ever dealt with,” Udall says.
The Arizona Bar Foundation honored Udall with the Walter E. Craig Distinguished Citizen Award in 1997, and the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association named him Defense Lawyer of the Year in 2001.
Udall is a fellow of the College ofTrial Lawyers and has contributed his legal expertise through the Volunteer Lawyer Program.
Over a career spanning more than 56 years, Udall has watched the legal profession change.
”Years ago, you’d handle a case with a lawyer, and after you tried it, you shook hands, had a drink and went on to the next case,” Udall says. “Today there’s too many personalities involved. It often gets personal, and it shouldn’t. Our primary duty is to represent the best interests of our clients.”
According to Udall, truly loving his work has been a key to his longevity.
”People always use the term, ‘burned out,’ and I’ve never understood what that means,” he says. ”I go to work every day ready for the next challenge.”
