Osborn Maledon
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW

Growing up, friends and family told Brett. L. Dunkelman that he ought to become a lawyer, but Dunkelman had other ideas.

He studied religion as an undergraduate, and later pored over literature in graduate school. He taught English; coached track and even helped a team of engineers put their technical ideas on paper during the early days of his career.

“Then I finally realized that what I really wanted to do was to go to law school,” he says.

Dunkelman earned his JD from the University of Arizona in 1980, and clerked for judges during his first two years out of law school, including Justice William H. Rehnquist, then of the United States Supreme Court.

Dunkelman fell into intellectual property while working as an antitrust lawyer in the early 1980s. Since then, IP cases have become an ever-growing part of Dunkelman’s practice.

“Being a lawyer requires that you be a problem solver. I find this type of law intellectually stimulating, fresh and new. I can’t imagine doing anything else,” Dunkelman says.

Dunkelman says that IP cases afford him opportunities to learn different about types of businesses and technologies. He has handled cases involving pharmaceuticals, medical products and computer systems. In addition to the ever-changing challenges of his work, Dunkelman’s firm has played an important role in his positive career experience.

“Osborn Maledon is a very egalitarian place. Since it’s nonhierarchical, we have a consensus oriented management style,” he says. “I wouldn’t want to work with anyone else.”
