In a career spanning three decades, William E. Shanks, Jr. has developed tremendous experience in executive compensation and employee benefit matters affecting emerging companies to Fortune 500 corporations.
“My father was a CPA and had an MBA, so I was always exposed to a number of discussions pertaining to finances, tax laws and accounting,” Shanks says. “I think that I was always attracted to business transactions and business law matters.”
As a young lawyer, Shanks won a case in the Alabama Supreme Court in which he talked the client into adopting a certain interpretation of a tax statute.
“The case was worth over $1 million to the company, and we won,” Shanks says. “It was fun for someone who was a relatively recent law school graduate.”
Shanks has retained some of his clients for more than 20 years due to hard work, staying current on legal changes, and being responsive to their needs.
“We try to always return phone calls immediately and do clients’ work promptly because we think it shows them that you value their business and take their problems seriously,” Shanks says. He enjoys working with his clients, most of who work in the human resources or finance department of their companies.
“They are really good people to work with because they truly want to do the right thing,” Shanks says. “I think that it makes our job much easier.”
