The Columbia County Public Safety Memorial Committee hosted the third annual Candlelight Vigil Memorial and Roll Call Thursday evening at the Lake DeSoto Memorial Monument.
Local public safety agencies, families and friends gathered to honor fallen heroes for their service to the community.
“The purpose is to recognize, honor and remember the officers who have given their lives in the line of duty,” said Florida Highway Patrol Maj. Richard D. Carpenter, co-chair of the committee. “This is to recognize the ultimate sacrifice given by these heroes, to bring the families back together once a year, and to never forget how dangerous our jobs can be and how precious life really is.”
Circuit Court Judge Julian Collins served as the guest speaker.
He emphasized that the men and women who have fallen in the line of duty are not mythical heroes, but true real-life human heroes.
“They were good and bad, weak and strong, wise and foolish, just like you and me,” he said. “Life is the greatest gift, so to lose it is the greatest sacrifice.
Lake City Police Department Capt. Gary Laxton assisted Lake City Councilman Willie Jefferson with the lighting of the candle portion and local agency representatives and family members presented the roll call.
