Criminal Defense: Non-White-Collar
While growing up in the Deep South, Richard S. Jaffe was troubled by the racial discrimination he observed in his hometown and even in the books he read.
“I was very influenced by injustices of any kind, and thought that being a trial lawyer would allow me to stand up for those who couldn’t stand up for themselves, especially people accused of criminal offenses,” Jaffe says.
Right before Jaffe was about to attend law school, something happened that had a profound effect on him. It was the day that his father was arrested at his auto parts store.
“He was taken to jail for having his business open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on a Sunday,” Jaffe says. “It was against the Blue Laws that restricted business owners from opening their shops on Sundays. I watched my father being taken away in handcuffs.”
Jaffe is proud to have served as lead counsel in three death penalty cases in which innocent people were wrongfully charged. He obtained not-guilty verdicts for his clients.
“Changing and saving lives has certainly been an achievement that I’m glad to be part of,” he says.”Being willing to put the client first, and taking the time to develop the trial skills and the legal skills required, gave me the opportunity to achieve the results that we did.”
