The energy was incredibly positive at the University of Florida’s Women in Entrepreneurship Summit today! It was such an honor to be invited to speak at the event. I loved re-connecting with my entrepreneurship professor Bill Rossi, networking with other entrepreneurs and meeting all of the talented students!
We spoke about creating a strong foundation for your venture, building your network, sharpening negotiation skills and cultivating long-term success.
A couple notes I jotted down …
1. Listen more than you speak.
2. Surround yourself with people who have ‘made it.’
3. Know that you can’t win every deal. Be selective.
4. Stay healthy. You must take care of yourself before you can help anyone else. The most successful CEOs are often religious when it comes to exercise and mindful eating.
5. It’s OK to apologize. Suck it up and move on.
6. Return calls.
7. Business is a two-step dance — you often take two steps forward and one step back.
8. Set personal boundaries when it comes to your emotions. It’s OK to get mad, scared or upset, but allow yourself to only let it affect you so much. Don’t let negative emotions consume you. Restrict it, deal with it, and then release it.
9. On daily basis, you may feel scared, not know what to do about a certain issue or feel a pang of self-doubt. No one has all the answers. It’s never the end of the world.
10. Commit to pursuing balance. Few of us will ever feel that we have finally accomplished a balanced life, but it’s essential that we keep trying.
